The Shy Teds – Kieran Ford, Brett Sargon, Raegan Lupi and Jed Tan – came out of their shells to win a short and sharp 2010 Auckland Under-21 Curling Championship at Paradice Avondale on Sunday 12 September. But the result was in doubt until the last stone.

Auckland Curling Club was faced with its usual constraint of limited ice time and were forced to adopt a knockout Championship / Plate format over just 3 rounds of 6 end (80 minute maximum) games.

The Shy Teds and Keswick Pearson's Frosties both had comfortable wins in their opening match, but Eleanor Adviento's Crazy Stoners needed a steal of 2 in the last end to head off Brittany Taylor's Henderson High School. The Long Shots (Long Bay College) caused the upset of the opening round, where a crucial 3 on the second end proved the difference in their 5-2 win over the Cleansweep side of Chelsea Farley.

In the Championship semi-finals Crazy Stoners were comfortable 8-1 winners over Long Shots, but Shy Teds needed a steal to tie up their match against Frosties when time ran out, and then took the draw to the button for the win.

The Plate semi-finals resulted in single point margins to Cleansweep and Massey High over Henderson High and Cheryl's Boys respectively. Cleansweep comprehensively took the Plate final against Massey, and Cheryl's Boyz won the Plate 3/4 game against Henderson.

Long Shots restricted Frosties to singles in taking third place in the Championship by 5-2. Meanwhile Shy Teds looked to be cruising at 4-1 up going into the last end against Crazy Stoners, then holding 3, seemingly well protected, with just the skips' stones to play.

Crazy Stoners didn't give up though, and skip Eleanor Adviento played a superb angled takeout to rattle the house, and after the dust had settled held shot, had 3 others in the house and her opponent's single remaining stone looked vulnerable to a raise takeout. Shy Teds skip Kieran Ford guarded it well enough though to restrict Adviento to just one, helping his team to a well-deserved Auckland Under-21 title.
