Smiles stayed on the faces of curlers yesterday as competition heated up for a silver cup believed to be one of the country's oldest sporting trophies.

Thirteen clubs from within the Naseby Curling Council vied for the Baxter Trophy on natural ice at Naseby's Centennial rink, and the "home club" – Otago Central – was the winner.

Curling in the Styx Valley – ODT Almost – but not quite.

It may not have been a bonspiel but the Styx Valley hosted the first significant outdoor ice-based event of this year's Central Otago winter sporting calendar last Friday.

It is my privilege to report on the past season of the Royal and Ancient game of Curling in the Naseby Council. A particularly mild winter with limited frosts in succession meant that most of the one day matchers were unable to be called, however a full calendar of matches were held on the Maniototo Ice Rink.

Stones and ice were the two main topics of conversation at the Maniototo International Curling Rink on Saturday afternoon when about 40 members and families gathered to celebrate 75 years of curling for the Ranfurly Curling Club.

The Ranfurly Curling Club celebrates 75 years of curling this weekend at Naseby, and centre of the celebrations will be a stone used in New Zealand's first curling event, held at Woodhaugh Gardens in Dunedin in the 1880s.
