A Dunedin home victory was assured in the final of this weekend's Wendorf Bonspiel as the teams took to the ice for the decider.

The local teams of Charlie McLeod and NZ skip Dan Mustapic qualified for the 1 vs 2 game at the top of the table, separated only by an extra-end 5-4 win to Mustapic in their fifth round pool match earlier in the day.

The final was another tight, low-scoring encounter but this time it was the McLeod team who took the honours with a 4-2 win.

The eight teams playing had earlier completed an enjoyable six draw round-robin to find the seedings for the finals round. Al Langille's Auckland team won the bronze medal match 6-2 against the Central Otago four of John Campbell, and Kris Miller's Maniototo squad hit their straps in their 5th/6th playoff for a 13-1 win against the Gore team of Lindsay Stevens.

Brydie Donald's side completed the list of winners in the final round by taking the honours in the 7 vs 8 match against Reece Aiken 7-4.

Locals lead at Wendorf

Saturday 19 September 2009 – The local teams of Charlie McLeod and NZ Men's skip Dan Mustapic are leading the field with perfect records after four rounds of the Wendorf Bonspiel, being held at the Dunedin Ice Stadium this weekend.

They lead Central Otago's John Campbell who has a 3-1 record. Maniototo's Kris Miller and Al Langille's Aucklanders are both at 2-2.

A feature of the tournament is the prize of a bottle of wine on offer during each round by the final team to make the required shot. In the second round the "prize box" moved from sheet to sheet as teams made a steal, and it finally came to rest with Al Langille's team.

They were followed in the next by Team Mustapic, winners of a bottle of fine NZ Sauvignon Blanc for scoring the last 3-ender. Al Langille took the prize again for last double takeout in the fourth round. His long runback double kill took the honours from teammate Lorne DePape, who made a cross-house double just moments earlier.

$350 was raised in a Calcutta auction on Friday night – prizes will be awarded for the teams finishing 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th overall.

Six-end round robin matches continue on Sunday morning, with teams being drawn from a hat before each round. The finals are scheduled for late afternoon.
