After a review by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the World Curling Federation, it has been announced that curling has now been officially removed from the list of sports which prohibits the use of beta-blockers. Athletes taking beta-blockers will now be allowed to compete in competitive curling events without the need for Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) from 1st January 2012 as a result of this decision.Beta-blockers are a class of drug used predominantly for the management of cardiac irregularities, heart conditions and high blood pressure. Previously, under section P2 of WADA’s Prohibited List, the use of the following, but not limited to, beta-blockers were prohibited in curling competition:
IMPORTANT - Athletes taking beta-blockers will still require a valid TUE until 31st December 2011 if they wish to compete in any curling event. The WADA Executive Committee confirmed this amendment to existing rules on September 17th 2011. Further information on the Prohibited List and WADA can be found on www.wada-ama.org |
