The 2009 Auckland Secondary Schools curling competition wound up at Paradice Avondale on Thursday night with some music, social points games, a draw to the button competition and the presentation of trophies to the winning teams. Brikenhead College's Team Patel won the points competition ahead of Epsom Girls Kwon and Henderson High Taylor who tied for second. Closest to the button was Alice Akaoka, just ahead of her Epsom Girls skip Jina Kwon. Dean D'Cruz from Kelston Boys and Tessa Farley from Epsom Girls tied for third. Peter Taylor, President of Auckland Curling and Liz Matthews, NZ Curling's Youth Development officer presented trophies and medals to the winners of the Auckland Secondary Schools competitions. The Mixed winners were Long Bay College Bauer ahead of Birkenhead College Patel and Massey High School Powlesland. The Boys trophy was won by Kelston Boys High School Sargon, with Long Bay College Steele second and Massey High School Lawrence third. Epsom Girls Grammar Farley were undefeated in the Girls competition, while Henderson High School Taylor and Epsom Girls Grammar Kwon filled the minor places. Kelston skip Brett Sargon spoke on behalf of all competing teams. He thanked Liz Matthews and her regular helpers from Auckland Curling Club for all of their work throughout the season, preparing ice and coaching. The last event in the 2009 School curling calendar is the NZ Secondary Schools championship at Paradice next weekend, 3rd and 4th October. ResultsEarlier articles
