Otago Boys High School has successfully defended the NZ Secondary Schools Curling title it won last year. The Dunedin side of Byron Dodge, Sam Blakely, Joe Anderson and Josh Wyber beat Long Bay College 8-3 in the Boys final at the NZ Schools Championship in Auckland this week. As in the earlier round robin game between these teams, the scores were level after four of the eight ends but the southerners were too consistent in the final half of the game. Avondale College took third place in the Boys championship. The local Henderson High School team of Waverley Taylor, Maria Anderson, Nicola Duncan and Shelley Addison-Bell capped off an outstanding year when they beat Epsom Girls Grammar in the best-of-three Girls final series, reversing last year’s result. This gave Henderson a clean sweep as they added the NZ championship to the Auckland and North Island titles they had won earlier in the season. Although unchallenged in defending their Mixed title, Birkenhead College still showed themselves to be worthy winners of a New Zealand Schools championship. Eleanor Adviento, Kurt Haynes, Kelsi Heath and Scotty Gannaway played a number of non-competition games against girls and boys teams and won them all. Adviento and Heath will represent their country in the New Zealand side at January’s Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria.
