Tournament Format

  1. The tournament is to be played under the WCF ‘Rules of Curling’, except as may be modified below.
  2. For the Men’s draw the tournament format will be a single round robin followed by medal games, as outlined below.
  3. The Women’s draw shall be based on a double round robin (including the mixed team) with the two top ranked Women’s teams playing a single game final to determine the gold and silver medal winners. Ranking of the women’s teams shall be based only on the games played against the other Women’s teams. The Mixed team shall not be eligible to win any medal and shall not progress beyond the round robin games.
  4. Round robin games are to be of 8 ends duration with an extra end to be played if scores are equal after 8 ends. A four minute break shall be taken after four ends.
  5. ‘Finals’ may be 10 ends if agreed by the qualifying teams and the chief umpire.
  6. Each team shall have a 6 minute practice prior to the commencement of each game. Order of practice and stone colour shall be determined by coin toss. The first practice will begin no later than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled game start time.
  7. At the end of each practice the respective team shall throw a single DSD stone, with sweepers. The DSDs will be used to allocate ’hammer’ for that game and, if required, to rank teams on completion of the round robin games.
  8. On completion of the round robin matches any teams with equal numbers of wins shall be ranked on the basis of the lowest DSD total. For this purpose the DSD total for the Men’s teams shall be the total of the four best DSDs recorded for the respective team and for the Women’s teams it will be the total of the three best DSDs recorded against the other Women’s teams.
  9. For the Men’s draw the team ranked top at the completion of the round robin will proceed straight to the gold medal game(s) ie the ‘Final’. The teams ranked second and third will play a single post round robin game with the loser being awarded the bronze medal. The winner of that game will then compete against the top ranked team in a ‘best of three’ final to determine the gold and silver medal winners, with the round robin game counting as the first of the three games.
  10. Any team is permitted to include one alternate player during the competition but no player may play for more than one team during the same competition. The name(s) of any alternate players (if not included on the team’s entry form) shall be provided to the Chief Umpire prior to commencement of the first round in which the respective team competes.
  11. Any team commencing the competition with four players will be permitted to continue to compete if one of those players is forced to retire from the competition due to injury or illness and a suitable substitute is not available. The Chief Umpire shall be advised of any such retirement.
  12. A team briefing will be held at 8.00am on Friday for all those players competing in the first draw. A separate briefing will be held for the other teams at 11.30am.
