Conditions of Play

  • The tournament is to be played under the WCF ‘Rules of Curling’, except as may be modified below.
  • The tournament format for the Mens’ teams will be a double round robin followed by the top two teams playing a single game ‘final’ for the gold and silver medals. (In accordance with NZCA policy a bronze medal will not be awarded since there are only three teams competing in the group).
  • The tournament format for the Womens’ teams will be a single round robin followed by the top two teams playing a single game ‘final’ for the gold and silver medals. The third and fourth ranked teams will play a single game ‘final’ for the bronze medal.
  • All games are to be of 8 ends duration with an extra end to be played if scores are equal after 8 ends. A four minute break shall be taken after four ends.
  • Each team shall have a 6 minute practice prior to the commencement of each game.
  • For the Womens’ teams the order of practice and choice of stone handle colour shall be determined by coin toss. The winner of the toss shall have choice of either first practice or stone handle colour. The team that practices first shall throw the last stone (have hammer) on the first end.
  • For the Mens’ teams the team marked with an asterisk (*) on the draw sheet shall have first practice and shall throw last stone (have hammer) on the first end. The other team will have choice of stone handle colour.
  • Where prior results indicate it is possible for any teams to be equally ranked with one or more other teams on completion of the round robin matches those teams will be required to play a ‘set’ of four DSD throws on completion of their respective final round robin game. The DSD ‘set’ requires each of the four members of the team to play one draw shot each, with sweepers, two with clockwise rotation and two with anti-clockwise rotation. The effective draw shot total will be the total of the best three of the four measured distances.
  • Any team is permitted to include one alternate player during the competition but no player may play for more than one team during the same competition. The name(s) of any alternate players (if not included on the team’s entry form) shall be provided to the Chief Umpire prior to commencement of the first round in which the respective team competes.
  • Any team commencing the competition with four players will be permitted to continue to compete if one of those players is forced to retire from the competition due to injury or illness and a suitable substitute is not available. The Chief Umpire shall be advised of any such retirement.
  • A team briefing will be held prior to each of the two rounds on Friday afternoon.
