Lorne was a founding member of the Auckland Curling Club in 1996, and since then has regularly travelled the 160km each way from his home in Te Awamutu to play during the curling season.

He was a member of the NZ Men's curling team in the 12 years from 1995, and in that time won 4 Pacific gold medals and represented his country 4 times at the World Championships, as well as at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Lorne had the distinction of being the oldest competitor in the curling tournament at Turin in 2006, and that was as a hard-working member of the front end – a testament to his fitness. He takes his inspiration from the late Sandra Schmirler, Olympic gold medalist at Nagano 1998.

He and his wife Carroll have been NZ delegates to the World Curling Federation for many years, and in 2007 Lorne was awarded Auckland Curling Club's first Life Membership.
