Naseby Council and Clubs

Browns opens Naseby Council season

30 Jun 2021 – Last week saw the last match in the first section of the Bowlers League indoor crampit competition at MCI, along with the final round of the Contractors Cup Hack Indoor competition.

On the adjoining outdoor Maniototo Ice Rink the first round of the Hore Cup was held, followed on Sunday by the Brown Trophy – traditionally the first match of the season for the four Naseby clubs.

The Dowse Trophy knockout competition has been put back a week, and will now start on Thursday 8 July at 7.00 pm.

Weather gods smile on Baxter Cup

31 Jul 2017 – Central Otago curlers were hailing the praises of the weather gods and icemaker Jock Scott after perfect ice conditions last weekend, when they had two days of traditional curling on the Centennial Ponds adjacent to the Maniototo indoor rink.

Five teams from the West Coast Curling Club made their annual pilgrimage to the Maniototo and played their hosts, the Hamiltons Club, on Saturday morning. In the afternoon the inaugural Naseby Council - All Comers Points Match was held.

"This was a 'toe in the water' to try something different from the old tried and true events," said NZ Curling chairman Sam Inder. "It attracted about 30 curlers, the majority of whom were the visiting West Coast Club and who took out all the honours."

Sunday saw the playing of the Baxter Cup for the first time since 2010.

13 Jul 2010 – Smiles stayed on the faces of curlers yesterday as competition heated up for a silver cup believed to be one of the country's oldest sporting trophies.

Thirteen clubs from within the Naseby Curling Council vied for the Baxter Cup on natural ice at Naseby's Centennial Ponds, opposite the indoor rink.

The "home club", Otago Central, took home the silverware.

5 Jul 2010 – Almost – but not quite.

It may not have been a bonspiel but the Styx Valley hosted the first significant outdoor curling match of this year's Central Otago winter sporting calendar last Friday.

Otago Central won the Naseby Curling Council's President's Trophy, the first time it had been played in three years.

Naseby Curling Council report to AGM

9 May 2009 – It is my privilege to report on the past season of the Royal and Ancient game of Curling in the Naseby Council. A particularly mild winter with limited frosts in succession meant that most of the one day matchers were unable to be called, however a full calendar of matches were held on the Maniototo Ice Rink.

Curlers gather for club jubilee

11 Aug 2008 – Stones and ice were the two main topics of conversation at the Maniototo International Curling Rink on Saturday afternoon when about 40 members and families gathered to celebrate 75 years of curling for the Ranfurly Curling Club.

Stone centre of curling celebrations

8 Aug 2008 – The Ranfurly Curling Club celebrates 75 years of curling this weekend at Naseby, and centre of the celebrations will be a stone used in New Zealand's first curling event, held at Woodhaugh Gardens in Dunedin in the 1880s.
