Mixed Doubles gold for Mustapic and Jones

Day 1 action
Mustapic and Jones met Peter Becker and Jessica Smith in Round 1

3 Aug 2014 – Dunedin's Dan Mustapic and Marisa Jones recorded a comprehensive win in the 2014 NZ Mixed Doubles Championship this weekend.

This was the first time they had played together in the event, and the first Mixed Doubles title for either. Dan Mustapic won silver in 2009 and 2010, while Rissy Jones claimed a bronze in 2011.

The triple knockout format saw the winners meet eventual silver medallists Bridget Becker and Scott Becker four times in total, with Mustapic and Jones winning three of these clashes.

The 14 teams competing all started in Pool "A" of the triple knockout and remained in that pool until they lost their first match, when they dropped to Pool "B". After teams lost a second game they dropped to Pool "C", and were eliminated from the tournament after their third loss.

The first game between the Mustapic / Jones team and the Becker siblings came in the Pool "A" final, where the former scored 4 in the final end to secure the win 11-8.

In the Pool "B" final the Beckers met defending champions Natalie Thurlow and Hans Frauenlob. Team Becker took charge in the second half of this match to win 8-3. They then met Mustapic and Jones for the second time, handing them their only loss of the weekend in an extra end match. The tables were reversed in the following match though, an 8-7 loss relegating the Beckers to Pool "C".

Bridget and Scott Becker forced their way back to the "C" final against Kenny Thomson and Waverley Taylor, NZ representatives at this year's World Mixed Doubles Championship. The Beckers recorded a 10-7 win there to earn themselves another crack at Mustapic and Jones in the Championship Final, but it was the latter team who secured the win and the championship.

Final Standings
