26 Mar 2018 – Eleanor Adviento and Brett Sargon had the best possible lead-in to the 2018 World Mixed Doubles Championship when they won the season-opening MCI Doubles over the weekend. They beat current national titleholders Bridget and Sean Becker 10-9 in a tense final.

Adviento and Sargon had a setback in the opening round, losing 6-8 to 2017 NZ Championship runners-up Jess and Ben Smith. They won their remaining pool games, but only secured a playoff spot with a 7-5 win against Thivya Jeyaranjan and Nelson Ede in the last round.

They then headed Dunedin teenagers Grace and Jayden Bishop 7-4 in their semi-final.

"We did make it a little bit hard for ourselves," said Sargon after the final. "Dropping a 3 in the last end of the final to tie it up wasn't ideal, but we did manage to salvage it in the extra."

"But it was a great competition," he added. "We had some tight games against good teams, and it was certainly a great lead-in to Sweden."

The Bishop siblings edged out Jeyaranjan and Ede for thrird place.

"Well done to Brett and Eleanor for taking out the comp", said National Coach Peter de Boer, "and for everyone involved in organising and supporting the event. Really encouraged to be seeing consistent 4 - 6 feet of curl on Naseby ice. With the new rocks and some real effort being put into the ice, we have the conditions to truly help our athletes prepare for arena ice!"

The World Mixed Doubles Championship will be held 21-28 April in Oestersund, Sweden.
