8 Oct 2021 – After a season of frustration with Covid-related delays, the South Island Secondary School Championships were held on the weekend of 2-3 October.

The competitors responded with a fantastic weekend of curling, demonstrating some great skill levels, and the growth shown over the weekend was outstanding.

Unfortunately, both the North Island and NZ tournament were canceled by Covid Delta lockdowns. The Auckland Schools league was also abandoned, leaving this event as the only school competition to be completed this year.

Maniototo Area School took the honours in the Girls' competition with an unbeaten run through the double round robin, while Kavanagh College won the playoff for silver from Bayfield High School's Heavy Sweepers.

The Boy's gold medal match was won by John McGlashan College, the school's first-ever national curling title. They headed off a spirited Wakatipu High School / Mt Aspiring College side, and Bayfield Burlers won their school's second bronze medal of the weekend.

The 'Spirit of Curling' Awards were presented for first time this year. Congratulations to the worthy recipients Zoe Harman (Maniototo), Tallulah Wilson-Brown (Bayfield), Hunter Burke (Mt Aspiring) and Darcy Nevill (John McGlashan).

Many thanks to sponsors Vetlife, The Southern Trust, and Caltex – and also to Janyne Fletcher for her photographs.
