Maniototo win 2008 South Island School champs

29 Sep 2008 – Maniototo Area School were crowned South Island Secondary School Curling champions for 2008 after a very tight competition at the Dunedin Curling rink on 25 & 26 September.

There was a boilover in the first game of the first round when the four from John McGlashan College comprehensively beat the favoured Maniototo team 9-3, while Otago Boys High School 1 edged out their schoolmates 8-6.

The second round saw what turned out to be the crucial game when Maniototo beat OBHS1, while OBHS2 had a win over McGlashan. This left all four teams with a win and a loss after two games. In the final round Maniototo and OBHS1 recorded victories, so both ended the tournament with two wins from their three games. Maniototo took the title by virtue of their win over OBHS in their head-to-head clash.

Organiser Edwin Harley congratulated all teams on their results and was pleased with the standard of curling on display, but a little disappointed that perhaps competition from other events had prevented more teams from entering.
