13 Sep 2024 – Mt Roskill Grammar's Rijul Stones edged out Papatotoe High's Cleal Curlers to win the final of the North Island Secondary School Championships last Thursday evening.
A record 17 teams contested the event, held at Paradice Avondale during Winter Tournament week. Tournament organisers were up to the task, and managed to fit a full three-pool draw into the three half-day sessions available for the preliminary sessions.
With Thursday evening's playoffs restricted to just two sessions, only four teams could qualify for the medal rounds. Papatoetoe's Cleal Curlers, Epsom Girl Grammar's Eggstravagants and Long Bay's Ice Ice Babies won their respective pools to go through. The Roskill Rijul Stones team earned their place in the semi-finals as the second-placed team with the best draw shot challenge.
Cleal Curlers and Rijul Stones comfortably won their respective semi-finals, and it was the Mt Roskill side of Abraham Chanwong, Christina Xu, Rijul Angulara and Maia Collins who eked out a one-shot win for the gold medal. The bronze medal match was also a one-point game, with Eggstaravagants coming out on top.
