6 Jun 2025 – It came down to the last stone, but Team Sargon successfully defended their title to win the 2025 NZ Mixed Curling Championship over King's Birthday Weekend.
Brett Sargon, Olivia Russell, KJ Fourd and Ellie McKenzie took a one-shot lead into the last end against Rachael Pitts, Hunter Walker, Ruby Kinney and Hunter Walker. The straight ice tested both sides as they looked to control the top of the house. Sargon lined up a narrow gap for his final stone, only to see it tracking towards an opponent's guard – but it rubbed off and rolled just far enough to secure the shot and the title.
Both finalists were undefeated through pool play. Sargon jumped out to an early lead against Team Whineray and secured an 8-5 win in the first semi-final. It was a much closer affair in the other semi, Pitts stealing three in the last end for a 7-6 win when Team Millar's final stone slid too far.
Jack Millar, Trinity Cowie, Michail Hobbs and Mia Bishop went on to win the bronze medal match.
Normally, the national champions would earn the right to represent NZ at the World Mixed Championship later in the year. However, World Curling found that there was no room for the 2025 event in the congested Northern Hemisphere season, with the Winter Olympics and two Olympic qualifying events to accommodate.
