Ellie McKenzie, Jed Nevill win Junior Mixed Doubles

 Mixed Doubles

23 Jul 2025 – Ellie McKenzie and Jed Nevill are the 2025 NZ Junior Mixed Doubles champions after an undefeated seven-game sweep through last weekend's championship in Dunedin.

The ten teams contesting the event played in two pools of five, with the top two in each pool qualifying for playoffs. There were some high-scoring contests through the pool games, with McKenzie and Nevill tested along the way. They topped Pool A, with Bella Stewart and Freddie Hore earning the other qualifying spot.

Olivia Russell and Jack Steele were unbeaten in Pool B, heading off runners-up Tahlia Petersen and William Loe by one point in their pool match.

The two pool winners met in the first qualifying match. McKenzie and Nevill took the direct path to the final when they held on for a 6-5 win over Russell and Steele.

Petersen and Loe comfortably won the second qualifier between the pool runners-up, then reversed the result of their pool match against Russell / Steele in the semi-final.

They were unable to continue the streak in the final, with McKenzie and Nevill winning the first two games of a best-of-three series to secure the title.

This is the second title for both winners. Ellie McKenzie won last year’s event with Jed’s brother Darcy, while Jed teamed up with Olivia Russell to win the inaugural championship in 2023. And it was also a bitter-sweet experience for Tahlia Petersen and Willian Loe, who took home their second successive silver medals.

Ellie and Jed now have first option to represent New Zealand at the 2026 World Championship, likely to be in May at a venue to be confirmed.
