New Auckland rink about to open

Ice grid installed, ready to flood

17 Feb 2026 – With the Winter Olympics in full swing, interest in curling is once again surging. The good news is that Auckland is about to have its own dedicated curling venue.

A multi-million-dollar curling facility will be opening shortly in Penrose.

The Auckland Curling Centre will be one of only four dedicated curling venues in the Southern Hemisphere. It is expected to attract local, national and international curlers, and will provide a new home base for the Auckland Curling Club. The Olympic-grade rink will also feature a bar, café and welcoming hang-out spaces, and will cater to a wide range of users including after-work social teams, schools, families, retirees, wheelchair curlers, and high-performance athletes.

Project Team Member and Auckland Curling Club President, Rhys Greensill, says the new rink will be an exciting community asset. "Curling is a sport for everyone, and we're excited to invite current and future curlers to join us for a session on the ice in 2026," he said.

"We are also looking forward to promoting and growing our sport in Auckland, and providing a much-needed North Island training and competition venue for both aspiring and current Olympic and World Championship curlers."

Adding to this momentum, German ice technicians are currently in Auckland supporting the development of the facility and the installation of the high-tech IceGrid floor. New curling stones have also arrived from Scotland, helping ensure the venue meets world-class standards.

With increased Olympic spotlight and a major new venue on the horizon, there are strong opportunities now for curling promotion, sponsorship, marketing partnerships, and venue-based activation. The Auckland Curling Centre will offer a unique destination not only for sport, but also for community events, corporate functions, and public "have-a-go" sessions – all you'll need is a pair of sneakers, a warm jumper, and a have-a-go attitude.
