9 January 1935 - 8 January 2021
Today we farewell our NZCA Life Member and curling stalwart, Stewart McKnight.
Stewart sadly passed away suddenly, aged 85 last Friday 8th January.
He was an all-round sports person who gave his best in every endeavour he undertook, including curling. He was part of our Idaburn Council and was a passionate Blackstone Hill curler.
Stewart contributed in many ways to our curling community, both indoor and outdoor.
He was a Life Member of the Blackstone Hill Curling Club, NZ Curling Association and Maniototo Curling International.
His roles in curling have included a National selector, past President of the New Zealand Curling Association (1989-91), the longest-serving Secretary of Idaburn Council, Chairman of the NZCA Executive, Chief Ice Master of Idaburn Dam and for approximately forty years he was the Master of Ceremonies of the Curlers' Court. Stewart's common sense and ability to see the bigger picture were invaluable.
Stewart toured to Scotland in 1986 and Canada in 1991. He was selected as fifth player / manager of the NZ Team who at the Pacific Asia Tournament 1991 in Japan, and was an integral force in the establishment of Maniototo Curling International.
Stewart will be sorely missed.
New Zealand Curling extends our deepest sympathies to his wife Shirley, his children Richard, Ken, Kay and their families.
