10 Nov 2017 – The Korean men and women won their finals at the Pacific Asia Curling Championships 2017 in Erina, Australia yesterday, providing the 2018 Olympic hosts with the best possible boost before February's Games.

The New Zealand sides just missed out on the opportunity to play in the medal rounds, both finishing fifth after the round robin stage.

The Kiwi women came closest, lying level with Hong Kong on 3 wins after the double round robin. The two sides shared the spoils in their two games, so played a sudden death Draw Shot Challenge after their last match to decide the playoff qualifier.

The NZ average of 85.6 cm didn't match Hong Kong's 57.9 cm so it was the latter side who progressed to their first ever semi-final.

The NZ men finished with a 4 win - 4 loss record in the 9 team field, one win behind the Koreans who qualified for the playoffs in fourth spot.

Both Kiwi sides seemed to struggle at times reading the swingy ice – although all teams had their moments, with a number of deliveries over-curling and open hits missed.

In the Women's semifinals, Japan stole the last end to beat China 6-5 and Korea accounted for Hong Kong 14-2. The lead changed hands several times in the final, Korea scoring two in the last to beat Japan 9-8. China took the bronze medal match 8-3.

Both Men's semis were thrillers, Korea scoring with the last stone to beat Japan 8-7, while China stole the extra end for a 7-6 victory over Australia.

Korea trailed the Chinese 5-0 at the fifth-end break in the final, before coming back with a 4 in the sixth end and finishing with a double in the last to win 9-8. Japan denied the hosts a medal, stealing 4 in the seventh end en route to securing the bronze 11-4.

All medallists qualified for the 2018 World Championships – the Women in March in North Bay, Ontario, Canada and the Men early April in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
