Birkenhead, Massey and Long Bay win Auckland School titles

6 Aug 2012 – Birkenhead College, Massey High School and Long Bay College were last night crowned Auckland Secondary School Curling champions for 2012.

They won the Girls, Mixed and Boys titles respectively.

The competition format had all teams mixed together in two pools. Round Robin results had worked to actually determine the individual titles earlier, at the semi-final stage.

Birkenhead's Girls (Eleanor Adviento, Kelsi Heath, Gabrielle PoChing, Eloise Pointon) and Massey Britz Mixed (Matthew Clapson, Tomo Konishi, Jordan Brown, Anna Mullin) had both won their semis to set up the overall championship final, won convincingly by Birkenhead with a 12-1 scoreline.

In the playoff for third overall, another Massey Mixed side (Sophie Prebble, Mort Heavan, Lisa Mattson) led Long Bay (Garion Long, Tamara Long, Matt Hohaia, Alex Martin, Ben Frew) 4-2 coming in to the final end. An attempted raise for two by Long Bay came up just short, so Massey took third overall and finished with a 1-2 result in the Mixed competition.

The plate final was won by Avondale College over Epsom Girls Claire, both teams securing second place in their Boys and Girls championship respectively. Henderson High Mixed had a walkover against Epsom Macauley in the plate consolation.

Many of the same teams will be in action again next week in the North Island Secondary Schools Championship, scheduled for Monday and Wednesday mornings at Paradice Avondale.
